Andrei Hagiu
Andrei Hagiu is a Principal at Market Platform Dynamics and Assistant Professor in the Strategy group at Harvard Business School.
Andrei is an expert business strategist with a focus on software and payment platforms. He has a deep expertise and knowledge of product roll outs involving new technologies that intersect both spaces, including emerging mobile and online payment technologies, and their adoption in the Japanese and Chinese markets. Andrei is a research fellow at the Research Institute of Economy Trade and Industry, an economic think-tank affiliated with the Japanese Ministry of Economy Trade and Industry, Tokyo, Japan.
This October, Andrei published the book, Invisible Engines: How Software Platforms Drive Innovation and Transform Industries (MIT Press, 2006) (with co-authors D. Evans & R. Schmalensee). The book reveals findings from his experiences working with some of the most successful software engines of all time and the lessons to be learned from them, in particular, how emerging and established platforms can transform cool technologies into profitable fixtures in today's global economy.
Andrei’s client work focuses heavily on successful strategies for businesses operating in two-sided markets. Most recently he built a theoretical model for studying pricing structures and the organization of two-sided platforms. He is currently applying the insights drawn from this formal work to the analysis of market structure and business strategies in a variety of industries: personal computers, videogames, consumer electronics (mobile phones, PDAs), shopping malls, digital content, etc.
Andrei graduated from the Ecole Polytechnique and the Ecole Nationale de la Statistique et Administration Economique in France with an M.S. in Economics and Statistics. He holds a Ph.D. in economics from Princeton University.
